Retirements

Prof. Udo Lindemann, Chair of Product

Development, retired on September 30,

2016.

Udo Lindemann studied Mechanical

Engineering at Hanover University, where

he subsequently became a research assis-

tant with Prof. Ehrlenspiel from 1974 to

1979. When Ehrlenspiel accepted a call to

TUM for the Chair of Design Techniques,

Lindemann followed him. After finishing

his doctorate in 1979, he held several

leading positions in industry, first at Renk

AG, Augsburg, in 1992 as CEO of MAN

Miller Druckmaschinen GmbH. In 1995

Lindemann succeeded his former teacher

as Chair at TUM. The Chair was renamed

‘Chair of Product Development’ in 1999.

Under the direction of Udo Lindemann,

the areas of activity broadend so that in

the meantime all stages of the develop-

ment process are covered. A special focus

is set on the research of design methods,

knowledge management and sustaina-

bility as well as management of design

and development. Systems engineering,

complexity management as well as

strategic product and process planning

have been addressed both in fundamental

and applied research projects.

Lindemann was especially successful

in the acquisition of projects, funded by

very diverse funding bodies, including

the German Research Foundation (DFG),

several federal ministries, the Bavarian

Research Foundation (BFS), the Zeidler

Research Foundation and the Volkswagen

Foundation. For several years, he was

speaker of a total of three DFG Collabora-

tive Research Centres (SFBs).

He is author, co-author and editor of

numerous scientific and text books,

journals and other scientific contributions.

Internationalization and scientific

exchange are very important to Udo

Lindemann. He is very active in attracting

researchers from all over the world and

also from other disciplines (e.g. medicine,

psychology, biology, informatics).

Udo Lindemann was also Dean of Studies,

Vice Dean and Dean of the TUM Depart-

ment of Mechanical Engineering for many

years. One of his main contributions was

to successfully introduce a reformed

Diploma curriculum, which later served

as a cornerstone for the introduction of

the Bachelor/Master system. Later he

was elected Member of the TUM Senate,

of which he was chairman for six years.

Despite his retirement he is still active

in Acatech, the Kompetenzzentrum

Mittelstand GmbH, the Future Council

of Bavarian Economy (Zukunftsrat der

bayerischen Wirtschaft) and in many other

bodies.
